I have to admit, the Bills beat down and the Tua concussion really did a number on my optimism. I’ve been through horrors in life and still this simple game can render me devoid of hope…
I have to admit, the Bills beat down and the Tua concussion really did a number on my optimism. I’ve been through horrors in life and still this simple game can render me devoid of hope…
Lucky for me I have a short memory and lots of drive for the future so I’m right back on the horse! 😂
Here’s why! 👀
What is Tua not good at? I’d say number 1 would be off script playmaking. Do you know what Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley are very good at? I can show you multiple plays from Skylar that look like Josh Allen. 👀 I like Tyler Huntley but let’s just focus on Skylar for a minute.
Skylar isn’t the best processor in the pocket under pressure. You won’t get the downfield quick timing and anticipation out of him… but were we with Tua this year? 👀
I could argue that this new offense was designed for Skylar more than it was Tua! 🤯
Mind you, I don’t think this was intentional. Tua was supposed to be light years more mobile than last year. He lost weight and worked on his explosiveness. This is not to say Skylar is a better QB than Tua. I think Mike McDaniel really screwed up with his design this year(might just be the best thing!). Hopefully Mike screwed up the play calling more than play design however, it seems the league expected exactly what he came out with. Defenses have cut off everything we were great at last year outside of 1 Tyreek Hill bomb 💣
So why would this scheme favor a Quarterback like Skylar or Tyler? The threat to extend plays can easily be maneuvered with such incredible receiving talent in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The simple fix is to change the receivers philosophy to keep on the play and find the open zone. Skylar can throw by sight instead of just through anticipation. In fact, he is at his best this way.
Now I cannot guarantee that this will not come with many mistakes! Both Skylar and Huntley are not the best of the best. But our team surrounding could be!
De’Von Achane is a stud! The check down has been a great addition. Checkdowns are more productive as the play extends! So having an option like this with the right play design can be astronomical! Jonnu Smith is a YAC monster. He can set up defenses and be a safety valve. Guess what type of QB can fully utilize a safety valve tight end? You got it 👌
This brings us to the final and most important point. Raise your hand if anyone enjoyed watching Grant Dubose missing a highly anticipatory pass that bounced off his pads for an interception…The difference with Skylar/Tyler vs Tua? That ball doesn’t get thrown. Now that’s not all good. Those tight window throws is what makes Tua a killer. But this is why there should be more optimism than I currently feel Dolphins fans are displaying!
Let me ask, does anyone find it strange that Skylar Thompson can make Erik Ezukanma
look like a stud, but Tua can’t? This might even be the same with Malik Washington but just focusing on EZE’s performances in the preseason with Skylar, nobody denies the guy looks incredible. So what gives? EZE is a contested catcher and YAC monster that does much better when throwing from site. The timing of this offense seems to be an impossible thing to chase! If Mike McDaniel is truly brilliant he will ready his guys to be multiple. In this case it includes a mixture of precision and play breakdown.
I expect Erik Ezukanma to become the proper WR3 in this offense. We will see if he gets the call up but I do have a feeling it is the right call by Mike.
So be optimistic my people! Because this… could be fun 🤩
